Nelson, British Columbia, is a charming town. Placed in the Selkirk Mountains on the shores of Kootenay Lake, Nelson boasts beautiful rugged landscapes and views. There is a lot of fun to do in Nelson during the colder months. Known as “The Queen City” due to its 350 restored heritage buildings from the days of the silver rush, Nelson has something for everyone.

Kootenay Artisan Fair Homespun Edition

Wintertime is a time for craft fairs and markets. Get your gift shopping done, and support local artisans at the same time. The Kootenay Artisan Fair is hosting a homespun edition, which will be held November 26-27 and December 10-11 at the Rod and Gun Club in Nelson, at 801 Railway Street. There will be fewer vendors, but every vendor will be selling quality, handmade products. Tickets cost $2 per person, per day, with children 12 and under free. Covid protocols will be in place, including mask mandates, contact tracing, and hand sanitizing stations.

Go Ice climbing

Ice climbing is what it sounds like, climbing ice and glaciers. Like rock climbing, there are varying difficulties and styles of both ice climbing and glacier trekking. If you have never been ice climbing before, it is best to explore the icy terrain with qualified instructors and guides

Find something new every time at Mini Market Series: Holiday Market

If you find yourself exploring downtown Nelson on November 20 or 27, or December 4, 11, or 18th, check out the Nelson Trading Company for a small local holiday market. Each market will have different vendors, meaning there will always be something new to check out! The mini markets are open from 11 am-5 pm at the Nelson Trading Company, on 402 Baker St.

Watch, or participate in a parade

On Saturday, December 4th, deck your car out with Christmas wrapping paper and lights and meet across from Abbey Manor at 5:45. The parade will start at six and will drive through town. If you would rather watch than drive, park along the parade route dressed warmly, and check out the festive cars, and maybe spot Mr. and Mrs. Claus as well!

Nelson is one of BC’s premier tourist destinations for a reason. With so much to do, make sure to stay where the action is. With spectacular accommodations, restaurants, and clean rooms with views, The Baker Street Inn is the perfect stay for a festive holiday in the Kootenays.
